December 26: Fair Isle Quilt Setting
December 26: Fair Isle Quilt Setting
I hope you've enjoyed Moda Bake Shop's 2019 Countdown to Christmas. As a designer, I've enjoyed seeing all the blocks our "Bakers" have posted in our Facebook group (Moda Bake Shop Bakers.) I never imagined my "Welcome Home" wreath block in shades of blue, or the 2019 series of blocks in blue, green and white. Keep 'em coming!
Now, what are you going to do with all those blocks? Over the next few days, your "Chefs" will present a few setting "recipes" we've cooked up.
The first is my "Fair Isle."
This quilt finishes at 58" x 74", and has spaces for all 25 blocks.
Make three 18.5" (unfinished) blocks
Make eight 12.5" blocks
Make fourteen 6.5" blocks
The blocks shown are for illustration only. You decide which blocks to make and where they go. (In fact, a few of the blocks here are from previous Countdowns.)
For setting only:
Sashing & Border: 2 yds (Dark Green in illustrations) I recommend a non-directional tone-on-tone print.
Backing & Binding: 4 yds (Medium Green in illustrations)
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Sashing & Borders
- Cut two 2.5" x WOF (Width of Fabric) strips, and cut three 2.5" x 12.5" strips from each.
- Cut two 2.5" x WOF strips, and cut six 2.5" x 6.5" strips from each.
- Cut six 2.5" x WOF strips. Trim four of the strips to 40.5" long. Cut two 14.5" strips from each of the remaining WOF strips. Sew a 14.5" strip to the end of each 40.5" strip, so you have four 2.5" x 54.5" strips.
- Cut four 2.5" x WOF strips. Trim two strips to 40.5", and trim the other two strips to 22.5". Sew the the 22.5" strips to the 40.5" strips, so you have two 2.5" x 62.5" strips.
- Cut three 6.5" x WOF strips. Trim two strips to 40.5" long. Cut two 6.5" x 18.5" strips from the remaining strip. Sew the 18.5" strips to the 40.5" strips, so you have two 6.5" x 58.5" strips.
Binding & Backing
- Cut seven 2.5" x WOF strips for binding.
- Cut two 64" x WOF pieces. Trim the selvage edges, and sew into a 64" x 80" (approx) backing.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Sew the three 18.5" blocks into one row. The row should be 54.5" long.
Step 2: Sew two rows with four 12.5" blocks in each row, separated by 2.5" x 12.5" sashing strips. Each row should be 54.5" long.
Step 3: Sew two rows with seven 6.5" blocks in each row, separated by 2.5" x 6.5" sashing strips. Each row should be 54.5" long.
Step 4: Lay out your rows in the order shown below, and sew them together, using the 2.5" x 54.5" sashing strips between the rows.
Step 5: Once the rows are together, sew the 2.5" x 62.5" strips to the left and right sides of the panel.
Step 6: Now sew the 6.5" x 58.5" strips to the top and bottom of the panel to complete your Fair Isle sampler quilt top.
