Materials Needed:

You will need the following to complete this project:

  • 1 Mini Charm Pack
  • 1/3 yard lining
  • 1 FQ exterior (Crossweave Black 12119 53)
  • (2) 12" or longer zipper
  • 1/2 yard of preferred stabilizer (I'm using Moda's Soft Fusible - MI 101)
  • Boxed Double Zip Pouch Pattern SLF2005*

Paper and PDF patterns as well as kits are available in our shop at Sew Lux Fabric or ask your local quilt shop to carry the paper pattern and kit one up for you!

This project is great for Mini Charm Packs, scraps and leftover Jelly Roll strips! For this example, I am using the new Serena Shores collection by Robin Pickens.

Step 1: Piece the Pouch Pocket

Follow the directions in the pattern to create two a patchwork panel. Then trim to size as directed in the pattern.

Adhere interfacing to the wrong side and add any decorative stitching or "faux quilting," if you'd like.

Step 2: Attach the Pocket Zipper

Baste one of the zippers RST to the top edge of the pocket.

Then place the pocket lining RST on top and sew to secure the zipper in place. Press layers away from the zipper and top stitch.

Then fold the pocket lining up so that the raw edge is aligned with the top of the zipper. Baste in place as shown below in the photo. (Check out the video tutorial linked at the end of this post as well.)

Finish the front of the pouch by adding the top and side exterior panels as directed in the pattern.

Trim corners and sides for boxing as noted in the pattern.

Step 3: Prepare & Install the Zipper

Follow the directions in the pattern to make and add tabs to the ends of the zipper. And to then install the zipper using a zipper foot and top stitch the exterior & lining in place.

Step 4: Finish the Pouch

Arrange the pouch so that the exterior is RST and the lining pieces are RST. Make sure the zipper is half open and pin or clip in place around all four sides, excluding the corner cut outs. Sew down the sides, being sure to backstitch at both ends. Sew the bottom of the exterior closed. And then sew the bottom of the lining closed, leaving an opening for turning later. Be sure to leave the cut out corners unsewn so you can box them to finish up the pouch assembly.

Turn the pouch right sides out through the hole in the bottom of the lining, press well and close the opening by hand or machine.

It has been so much fun sewing pouches with you this year! We're excited to continue our pouch club at Sew Lux in 2025.

We'll be back here on the Moda Blog on the 3rd Thursday each month with a new series - the Table Runner Club! In January, we will be sewing the Bowen Table Runner (top left in the photo below). Ask your local shop to carry and kit up the pattern for you or any of our fun to make and sew patterns.
