Snowy Peaks is one of the setting options in the 2020 Countdown to Christmas - Winter Frost. For more info about this quilt-along, check out the Frequently Asked Questions and join our Moda Bake Shop Bakers group. Find all the blocks {here}.

Chef's Notes:

This layout uses [12] 12 inch blocks and [18] 6 inch blocks. It also has visions of the snow topped mountains off in the distance as a top and bottom border. I would rate this setting a medium, due to the quarter square triangles. (QST) which form the snow topped mountains.

YIELD

58” x 70.5” finished quilt

INGREDIENTS

¼ yard – white
1 yard – Icy blue for sashing
1 yard – dark blue for QSTs and border
½ yard – medium blue for QSTs
(12) 12” blocks
(18) 6” blocks
Note: For setting only

INSTRUCTIONS

CUTTING

For the sashing from the Icy blue fabric cut & piece:
[6] 2” x 54.5” strips for the horizontal sashing
[9] 2.5” x 12.5” strips for sashing between the 12 inch blocks
For the borders from the dark blue fabric cut and piece as needed:
[2] 66.5” x 2.5” strips for the left and right sides of the quilt top
[2] 58.5” x 2.5” strips for the top and bottom of the quilt top

For the Snowy Peaks (QSTs), From the white fabric cut [1] 5.75” Width of fabric (WOF) strip
Sub cut into [6] 5.75“ squares – draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric

From the dark blue fabric cut [1] 5.75” WOF strip
Sub cut into [6] 5.75” squares

From the medium blue fabric cut [2] 5.5” strips
Sub cut into [12] 5.5” squares - draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the
fabric

STEP 1. MAKE QUARTER SQUARE TRIANGLES

Place the 5.75” white square on top of the 5.75” dark blue, right sides together. Sew ¼ inch on each side of the diagonal line. Cut in half on the drawn line. Press open. Place a 5.5” medium blue square on top of the half square triangle you just made in the steps above. Sew ¼ inch on each side of the diagonal line. Cut in half on the drawn line. Press open. Trim to 5”.

Repeat to make [24] 5” QSTs.

STEP 2. QUILT ASSEMBLY

Sew [12] QSTs into 2 rows, one for the top of the quilt and one for bottom of the quilt. Refer to the setting
illustration for the directions of the blocks. Sew 2 rows of [9] 6” blocks together into a row. Sew three rows of [4] 12 inch blocks with 2.5” x 12.5” Icy Blue sashing in between the blocks as shown in the illustration.

Finish the quilt top assembly by sewing the rows together with the horizontal sashing as shown in the
illustration. Complete dark blue fabric strips as the border.
